How is our tax sytem fair when bartering is not taxed? If I agree to cut the grass of my dentist in exchange for him filling a tooth cavity, neither he nor I pay any income tax on that. If I were to pay him cash for his service he would have to report it as income and pay tax. There is a lot of bartering in our country that provides the same goods and services as those that are channeled through the tax system. This black market is a way to avoid taxes and shows how failed and unfair our tax system is. Those who follow the letter of the law are penalized and those who do black market transactions are rewarded. Does this show a real failure of using "income" as the basis of a revenue system? The founding fathers had the wisdom to NOT use income as a revenue source. Shouldn't “assets” be the basis of a revenue system? - almost all assets are easily accessible by current records: real estate, stocks and bonds, saving accounts, all vehicles, insured valuable property - and is it not these assets that the government protects with its resources?
